Our Safeguarding Policy

1. Purpose and Scope

This safeguarding policy applies to all drama club sessions delivered by the two teachers, David Hinton and Camilla Vella, in any primary school. It covers all pupils attending and both teachers when working together or separately. The teachers will follow each school’s safeguarding, behaviour and health and safety procedures.  For the purposes of this policy David Hinton and Camilla Vella will be referred to as Drama Workshops.

Drama Workshops:

  • hold Enhanced DBS checks, as required for anyone working in regulated activity with children;

  • have completed Safeguarding Level 2 training, ensuring they understand how to identify, respond to, and report safeguarding concerns;

  • hold current Paediatric First Aid Certificates.

 

2. Key Safeguarding Responsibilities

Drama Workshops:

  • follow the host school’s Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy;

  • read and comply with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) Part One;

  • know the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and deputy for each school;

  • complete required safeguarding training and refreshers;

  • maintain a child-centred approach and act in the best interests of the child;
     

Schools will provide: DSL contact details, site-specific procedures, relevant policies, and visitor/contractor rules.
 

3. Professional Conduct and Boundaries

 

Drama Workshops:

 

  • work openly and visibly;

  • avoid being alone with a child;

  • use verbal instruction or group demonstration instead of physical contact;

  • does not share personal contact details or social media with pupils;

  • communicates with parents through official school channels and parents/carers direct once contacted by the parents/carers;

  • follow school rules on mobile phones, photography and image use;

  • report any low-level concern or allegation about staff through school procedures;
     

4. Safe Session Management (Drama-Specific)

Drama Workshops:

  • complete a risk assessment for each school’s space, props and activities;

  • keep the room safe, clutter-free and supervised at all times;

  • reinforce a clear pupil code of conduct (respect, safe movement and listening).

  • check for medical needs or allergies relevant to activities;

  • record and report any accidents or near misses to the school.

5.     Responding to Safeguarding Concerns
 

Drama Workshops will:

  • act immediately on any concern;

  • report concerns to the DSL without delay;

  • record concerns factually: summary, actions taken, decisions made and rationale;

  • share information when necessary.  Data Protection is not a barrier to safeguarding;

  • call 999 if a child is in immediate danger.
     

If a child discloses, Drama Workshops will:

  • listen calmly;

  • not promise confidentiality;

  • use the child’s words, reassure them, record the disclosure, and report to the DSL.

    ot investigate.
     

6. Allegations Against Staff
 

Any concern or allegation about either teacher must be reported through the school’s procedure. If the allegation concerns school staff, Drama Workshops will report directly to the DSL.
 

7. Record-Keeping
 

Drama Workshops will maintain:

  • a session log (date, activities, attendance, incidents);

  • safeguarding concern forms (submitted to DSL);

  • risk assessments for each school. Store records securely and share only with authorised staff.
     

8. Online Safety
 

Drama Workshops will:

  • follow the school’s online safety and mobile device policies;

  • never share images without parental permission.

  • report any online-related concerns to the DSL.
     

9. Review
 

This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if statutory guidance changes.
